This charming colonial Mexican town lies on the slopes of a hill and is nestled in a beautiful valley. Capital of the state of Queretaro, this lovely walkable city is also one of Mexico's most historic. It played a crucial part in the start of War of Independence's in 1810. In 1867, it was the site of the execution Mexico's Emperor Maximilian and chosen for the ceremonial signing of the Mexican Constitution in 1917. History aside, Queretaro is also known, for its opal mines. A stroll along the city's cobblestoned streets takes you by numerous jewelry stores with brilliant displays of opals in many colors. The city is located 63 miles from San Miguel de Allende. |
